What if your brand-new Tesla drove itself to your house — with no one inside? That once science-fiction scenario is about to become a real-world event.
According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the company plans to complete its first-ever fully autonomous vehicle delivery on June 28, using a Model Y that will drive itself from the factory directly to a customer’s home—with no human intervention.

“First Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house is June 28,” Elon confirmed on X.
How Will It Work?
Tesla is calling this new milestone Self-Delivery, and the process will run on the latest version of Full Self-Driving (FSD)—the same software stack that powers Tesla’s Robotaxi prototypes in Austin, Texas.
Here’s what we know so far:
- The car will roll off the factory line at Giga Texas.
- It will autonomously navigate public roads to a customer’s residence within a geo-fenced area.
- The customer will receive an in-app notification when the car arrives.
- The whole trip will be completed without a driver, delivery person, or escort vehicle.
This isn’t a remote-controlled gimmick — it’s genuine, unsupervised autonomy.
Why Austin and Why Model Y?
Tesla hasn’t officially named the city, but all signs point to Austin, where Tesla is actively testing FSD with its Robotaxi fleet. The Model Y is Tesla’s most popular vehicle, and as a result, FSD is most optimized for it.
It’s likely that:
- The self-delivery feature will debut on Model Y units first
- It will only function in specific zones (geo-fenced) during the early rollout
- Tesla will eventually extend it to other models like Model 3 and Cybertruck
Elon Musk’s Comment on Safety
Although Elon Musk set the tentative delivery date for June 28, he warned that the date “could shift” depending on safety assessments.
“We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift,” Elon posted.
Tesla is understandably cautious—this is the first time a car will deliver itself to a real customer, and the implications are huge.
Why Self-Delivery Matters
Tesla’s autonomous delivery model could revolutionize last-mile logistics, with major benefits:
For Tesla:
- Cuts out the need for car carriers
- Reduces staffing at delivery centers
- Streamlines production-to-ownership process
For Customers:
- Faster delivery times
- No need to visit a showroom or delivery center
- A mind-blowing first impression of Tesla ownership
A Glimpse Into the Future
Self-delivery isn’t just a flashy idea—it’s a crucial part of Tesla’s larger vision:
- Builds on the Robotaxi infrastructure
- Reinforces confidence in unsupervised FSD
- Demonstrates how software continues to lower the cost of ownership
And yes, it will likely run on the same internal FSD build that’s powering Tesla’s experimental Robotaxis in Austin—just with a different purpose.
