  • Tesla has taken a big step toward securing its own lithium supply. The company’s Texas lithium refinery has successfully produced its first batch of spodumene, a key material used in EV batteries.
  • But here’s what makes this even more impressive—Tesla achieved this milestone in record time, faster than most plants outside Asia.
  • With the refinery set to be fully operational by 2025, Tesla is making bold moves to control its battery supply chain and meet the rising demand for electric vehicles. So, what does this mean for Tesla and the future of EVs? Let’s break it down.

Tesla’s lithium refinery in Texas has successfully produced its first batch of spodumene, a mineral that contains lithium, which is essential for making batteries.

The company shared this update in its Q4 and Full-Year 2024 Report.

According to Tesla, it managed to produce spodumene just 18 months after construction on the refinery began. It’s impressive right?

The company also noted that it achieved this faster than any non-Asian plant currently in operation. Tesla is still on track to fully launch the refinery in 2025.

The Texas refinery officially started operations in December 2024, exactly a year after Tesla began building the facility.

This marks a big step in the company’s goal to secure its own lithium supply and support the growing demand for electric vehicles.
